Bespoke vs Template Websites for Service Businesses
When a template is genuinely enough, and when it quietly costs you enquiries. An honest comparison of cost, performance, SEO and conversion.

Short answer: if you are an established service business turning over six or seven figures, a template will usually get you a website that looks fine and converts worse than it should. If you are earlier on, or the site is a business card rather than a sales channel, a good template is a perfectly rational decision and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
The honest version of this comparison is not “bespoke wins”. It is “bespoke wins on a specific set of conditions, and if none of those conditions apply to you, save your money”.
Here is how to work out which side of the line you are on.
What each one actually is
A template site means a pre-built theme or page-builder layout — WordPress with Elementor or Divi, a Squarespace or Wix theme, a Shopify theme — where the structure, components and interaction patterns are already decided. You swap in your copy, images and colours. The build cost is low because the design and engineering already happened for someone else.
A bespoke site means the structure is designed around your sales process. Someone works out what a prospect needs to see, in what order, to enquire — and then builds only that, in code, with no leftover machinery from the other ten thousand businesses using the same theme.
The difference is not “custom-looking”. Plenty of template sites look excellent. The difference is what the site is optimised for.
Where templates genuinely suffice
Be honest about this, because overspending is a real failure mode too.
You are pre-product-market-fit. If you are still changing what you sell every quarter, do not commission a bespoke site. You will invalidate it before it earns anything. Get something live cheaply and learn.
The site is a credibility check, not a channel. Some businesses win everything through referral and tender. The website exists so the prospect can confirm you are real before a call that was already booked. A tidy five-page template does this job completely.
Your offer is simple and singular. One service, one location, one type of customer. The standard hero-services-testimonials-contact structure genuinely fits. There is nothing to restructure.
You have no traffic and no plan to get any. Bespoke buys headroom on SEO and conversion. If nobody is arriving, there is nothing to convert.
Your budget is genuinely tight. A well-executed template with proper copy will out-perform a badly-executed bespoke build every time. Copy and offer beat craft. Spend on the offer first.
Where templates start costing you
The costs are rarely visible, which is why they persist for years.
Performance drag
This is the most measurable one. A page-builder site carries the theme’s full CSS and JavaScript on every page, whether the page uses it or not, plus whatever each plugin loads. Sliders, accordion widgets, animation libraries, three separate icon fonts. You end up shipping several hundred kilobytes of code to render a page that is fundamentally text and two images.
You can claw a lot of this back with caching, image optimisation and decent hosting — and you should. But you are optimising downward from a heavy starting point. A bespoke build on a modern static framework starts near zero and only adds what the page needs. On mobile, on a patchy connection, that gap is the difference between a page that feels instant and one that feels like work. We covered the mechanics of this in how page speed impacts user retention.
The structure fights your sales process
This is the expensive one, and it is invisible on a screenshot.
Templates encode assumptions: that visitors read top to bottom, that one call-to-action serves everybody, that your services are peers of equal weight. Established service businesses rarely work like that. You might have one service carrying most of your margin and three that exist for completeness. You might have a two-step qualification where the first ask should be a survey, not a call. You might need different proof for a homeowner than for a facilities manager.
A template makes you flatten all of that into its grid. Every compromise is small. Twenty of them is a site that converts a point or two lower than it should, forever.
SEO ceilings
Templates are usually fine on SEO basics — clean URLs, editable meta tags, an XML sitemap. Where they run out is at depth. Heading structures dictated by the theme rather than by the content. Bloated DOM that buries the actual answer. Schema that either is not there or arrives via a plugin that emits it in a generic shape. Internal linking that follows the theme’s menu logic instead of your commercial priorities.
None of these are fatal individually. Combined, they mean you are competing in a market where your rivals can be structurally better without being better at anything. If organic is a real acquisition channel for you, that ceiling matters. It is exactly the ground we cover on the SEO service.
Editing gets slower, and everyone looks the same
The pitch for page builders is that you can change things yourself. In practice, after two years and eleven plugins, most owners are afraid to touch it — because the last time someone edited the homepage, the mobile layout broke.
And if a prospect gets three quotes and all three websites use the same theme, price is the only remaining variable. Differentiated design is not vanity at that point; it is margin defence.
What the difference actually buys
Two things, mainly.
Speed as a compounding asset. Faster pages hold more of the visitors you already paid to acquire, and give you a modest structural advantage in search. That advantage runs every day, for years, at no ongoing cost.
Structure built around the enquiry. The point of a bespoke build for a service business is not the aesthetic. It is that every page has one job and the path to enquiry is the shortest route through it. When we rebuilt Mr Wardrobe — site rebuilt, technical issues fixed, SEO strategy launched — the result was over £75,000 a month in inbound enquiries from organic search. With Ecocamel, a 33% sales boost from organic. Neither came from a nicer-looking homepage; both came from fixing structure and visibility together.
The money, plainly
Our own numbers, so you can size the decision (all +VAT):
- Launch — £1,490. A fast, focused small site. Honest positioning: this is where we compete with a good template, not with a bespoke build. Right for a simple offer that needs to be live and quick.
- Studio — £3,990. The usual home for an established service business. Structure designed around your sales process rather than inherited from a theme.
- Commerce (Shopify) — £6,500 for a properly built store.
- Bespoke — from £8,950, where the site is doing something genuinely custom: complex configurators, integrations, unusual buying journeys.
Compare that against a template build honestly: theme licence, page-builder licence, hosting, plugin subscriptions, and either your time or a freelancer’s. The gap is real, but it is smaller than the sticker price suggests once you run it over three years — and the ongoing ownership cost afterwards is £49/mo on our Astro stack versus £149/mo for WordPress or Shopify, because there is simply less to maintain. How to decide in five minutes
Score yourself. If you answer yes to three or more, bespoke pays for itself:
- Is organic search or paid traffic a real acquisition channel — or intended to be?
- Does one service carry disproportionate margin and need its own dedicated path?
- Do you sell to more than one type of buyer who needs different proof?
- Is your average job value in the thousands rather than the hundreds, so a single extra enquiry a month covers the difference quickly?
- Are you being routinely compared against two or three direct competitors on price?
- Does your current site take more than three seconds to become usable on a phone?
Zero or one yes? Buy a good template, spend the saving on your offer and your copy. That is the right call and we will tell you so.
Talk it through
We have built over 200 sites since 2019 from our studio in Twickenham. Nathan handles the work directly — no account managers, no handover to a junior after the sales call.
If you want a straight read on whether your current site is actually costing you enquiries, get in touch. If it is fine, we will say so. If it is not, we will show you specifically where and what it would cost to fix — see how we build websites for what that looks like in practice.
